County 4-H Food Challenge and Food Show Contests

Our county 4-H Food Challenge and Food Show contests will take place on Thursday, November 6, 2014, out at the FCS/Annex Building at the Limestone County Fairgrounds.  We do have three Food Challenge kits in the office that may be checked out by teams, please call ASAP to reserve one.  Kits must be reserved and picked up in advance of the contest and returned clean!

Registration of teams must be received by 10 am on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, in the Extension Office.  Earlier is better so that we can verify eligibility!

The contest starts at 6 pm sharp so arrive between 5:00 and 5:45 pm to get signed in and set up.  The contest orientation begins at 5:50 pm and cooking starts at 6 pm sharp!

Awards will be given at approximately 9 pm, depending on how many entries we have to judge.  Parents are not allowed in either the contest rooms nor the judging rooms.

Also, the outside of the building can be a bit dark and you may want to bring a flashlight to load up your vehicle after the contest.

Contest Notes

For either contest, youth must be a 4-H member (paid, enrolled) in Limestone County 4-H and be eligible as determined by his or her school.

Food Challenge is a team-based contest.  Teams must have at least three members and no more than five members.  Age divisions are either Junior/Intermediate (8 & in 3rd grade or 9-13) OR Senior (14-18 years of age).  We can send 2 Junior/Int. teams and 2 senior teams to District.  ONLY seniors may participate in the State contest, if they qualify at District.

Food Show is an individual contest where you prepare your dish in advance and present it to the judges.  At the county contest, youth may be a Clover Kid (5 years old & in kindergarten), Junior, Intermediate, or Senior.

There are four food show categories:  Protein, Fruit & Vegetable, Grains, and Dairy.  Only Seniors may advance to District and possibly to State.  If a Senior, recipe must fit the theme of the year:  Bringing Texas to the Table.

In addition to the prepared dish, youth should bring a serving utensil.  It’s encouraged to only bring one serving of the dish to the contest so no food is wasted.  Contestants must prepare an oral presentation.
